      John M. Bentley

The well-known real-estate and insurance broker of Pendleto n, is a native of Missouri, being born in that state on Mar ch 9, 1842. He received his education in his native place a nd remained there until he grew to manhood. It was as e earl y as 1861 that he took that noted trip, the experiences an d scenes of which never can be erased from the memory, of c rossing the plains with ox teams. He went through to the Pa cific coast and engaged in stock raising in
Californiaa. This was continued until 1871, when he first ca me to Umatilla county. The following year he came to Pendl eton and commenced work at his trade, carpentering and cont racting, for several years. Seeing a fine opportunity fo r stock raising, hhe embarked again in that enterprise, an d was very successful, as he also was in farming, for he ad ded that to his occupations. This business led him well ove r the county, and he became well
acquainted with all the early settlers and the resources o f the surrounding country. He gradually increased his holdi ngs in real estate and also continued raising stock, and wh en an opening presented itself for a good venture in lumber ing he at once accepted it and was well rewarded. I In 189 3 he lost ninety thousand dollars in a fire and also eighte en thousand dollars in security notes. In 1885 the people c alled him to the position of sheriff of Umatilla county, wh ich office he held and faithfully and acceptably discharge d its duties for two years. He then took up the real-estat e business, being able in that place to better look after h is varied holdings through the county. In 1892 he was appoi nted deputy United States marshal and continued in that cap acity for four years. Since then he has continued his real- estate and insurance office. He has a large amount of rea l estate in the county and is a
representative citizen who has the confidence and respect o f his fellow citizens. He is always active for the interest s of the county and so is more or less in its politics, no t as a partisan but as one watching for the welfare of it s citizens.

He affiliates with the leading fraternal orders, being a me mber of the F. & A. M. and also of the chapter, of the I. O . O. F. and also of the A. O. U. W.

He was married on January 2, 1868, to Miss Mary F. Yocum, i n the state of California. She was a native of Missouri, Ra y county. They have five childreren, as follows: Hattie, wif e of Mort A. Ferguson, of this county; John E.; Carrie, wif e of J. L. Deering, yard master at Umatilla; N. Francis an d Mabel.

"For sale is a very old Family History Poloyglot Bible. Th is one says is was published by the American Tract Society , 150 Nassau Street, New York. This one includes both th e Old and New Testaments. The only date I can find anywher e is on a page that says "Entered according to Act of Congr ess, in the year 1861, by the American Tract Society.... " So, not sure if that was the date it was printed or publ ished or not.

Condition is very good for it's age. As you can see in th e pics the binding is in very good shape, and it appears th at all the pages are still in place and attached. The fron t and back covers are very good. I wasn't able to flip thr u all the 1502 pages, but it doesn't look like it was abuse d - very few if any marked, torn or creased pages. There a re maps at the front of the Bible and charts at the back.

One very unique thing about this Bible is that it has a fe w pages of very interesting hand-written family history!! ( see pic #5 for sample). These pages are placced between th e Old and New Testaments. The family is that of John Mordi ca Bentley born in Boon Co. Missouri March 8, 1842 who marr ied Mary Francies Yoakum on Jan. 2, 1868 with 9 children li sted! This is would be an awesome find for the right Bentl ey family!

      The size is approx. 3" thick X 8" X 11"."
